Assistant Gardener

We are currently advertising to hire an assistant gardener for our summer season. This team member will work closely with our Lead Gardener and Project Managers. This position will have the opportunity to work part or full time during the winter months, and continue their education.

Job Role:

To assist our lead gardener in designing, installing and maintaining annual planters and softscape spaces within a landscape setting.



Requirements:

  • Ability to speak, read and write English

  • Access to reliable transportation to our shop located in St. Andrews, MB

  • Ability to stand and work with your hands for long periods of time

  • Ability to bend and maintain beds for long periods of time

  • Have 1 year of gardening experience or like education in horticulture

  • Ability to listen to and follow instruction from a direct supervisor

  • Comfortable with working in dusty, hot, wet and/or cold temperatures

  • Comfortable working weekends if schedule permits

  • Experience with integrated pest management practices

  • Valid Class 5 License


Daily Tasks Include:

  • Water container plants or planting beds as required or scheduled by Lead horticulturist

  • Drive company truck to and from job sites

  • Weed beds by hand

  • Prune plants as required and outlined by Lead Horticulturist

  • Assist in planting practices

  • Assist in landscape maintenance operations as required

  • Operate commercial grade small engine equipment

  • Use basic hand tools such as rakes, shovels, pruning equipment etc.

  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment

  • Apply plant specific fertilizer

  • Apply government monitored pesticides and herbicides

  • Perform beginning of day and end of day routine tasks to optimize efficiency


Required Skills:

  •  Work with lead horticulturist to complete site requirements each day

  • Ability to work alone and/or unsupervised for extended periods of time

  • Communicate by receiving and providing direction to fellow team members

  • Help lead younger or inexperienced employees in completion of routine tasks on site

  • Identify plant disease, stress, or damage and report to lead horticulturist

  • Use cloud based software to track hours on site appropriately, and document any plant deficiencies

  • Operate small and large engine equipment

  • Perform routine maintenance on all equipment and tools required for horticulture


Length of Employment:

  • May 1st - November 15th ( Weather dependent )

  • Part-time and full-time employment available in Winter completing snow removal, carpentry work, shop work

Expected Hours :

  • Monday to Friday

    • Weather and schedule may require some Saturday work

  • 8-10 hours per day​


Compensation:

  • Starting wage of $17-$24/hr based on experience and skill set

  • Paid Overtime
